About The Artwork

The title 'drop' comes from the piece of root at the top right, which appears to be falling into the picture. The root belongs to a kind of reed that grows along riverbeds near the sea. I collected it on a beach walk and took it home to paint. My recent paintings all feature natural objects like this, but these things are placed in an abstract circular design on a white background, as if they are in movement. In this series of pictures, I'm using natural objects that aren't by themselves particularly pretty, but which have their own amazing details and their own beauty. These are things that we usually overlook and walk past without bothering to examine, but it's worth stopping to look at them for a moment and marvel at the complexity of nature. I began this work by lightly drawing in the objects with thin charcoal sticks, moving, adding and replacing objects until I felt I'd found the right composition. Even after I had started painting these things in acrylic, I went back a lot and made a lot of compositional changes. The sides of the canvas are also painted, and only artist’s quality colours were used, and it has been varnished with acrylic spray varnish. *The painting is shipped in a tube in order to cut cargo costs for the buyer.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
