Drupadkanya literal translation - daughter of king drupad is a painting inspired by the feminist icon draupadi from the Indian mythology of the Mahabharata. Draupadi was one of the first known polygamous figures in Indian folklore, a wife to the 5 Pandav Princes. She was gambled away as a price to be won by the oldest of her five husbands, a compulsive gambler. Rejecting the same she fought back and vowed to destroy the entire kuru clan, the adversaries of her husbands and incidentally also their cousins. The painting is a visual commentary on one of the many regrets that draupadi had regarding certain decisions of her life that were guided by some of the arguably unjust social norms of her time. During her wedding ceremony where her hand was to be won in marriage by the most skilled archer in the kingdom, two men won the contest. The first to win was karan the son of a low caste member of the society and as per norm was not eligible to contest, however looking to challenge the existing system, he participated anyway, and as a result draupadi insulted him in front of the entire polity and nullified his participation. As per some accounts (fiction) draupadi went on to regret her decision on discovering that Karan was a high born who was abandoned by his mother on birth and was actually the eldest brother of her husbands. Had she not rejected his proposal, she would've lived a life free from the various slurs thrown at her character, and the insult of being gambled away. Karan, it is said, imbibed all the characters of her 5 husbands. There was apparent unrequited love from both sides. The different elements in the painting are related to the written backstory. And in totality it is surrealist representation of the same. The base of the painting is canvas and the medium used is acrylic paint, and it is mounted on board.
