About The Artwork

This work represents the beginning of the corporate “war” between the drink companies “Pepsi” and “Coca-Cola,” a feud that would increasingly develop from the expansive advertising campaigns of the 1950s and early 1960s. The composition of Andy Warhol’s 1962 painting “Gold Marilyn Monroe” was a major point of inspiration for this work; however, the “Peps-Cola” logo, synonymous with American culture, replaces the famous face of Marilyn who exists similarly as an almost immediately recognizable symbol within the American media.
