About The Artwork

The vast majority of my completed paintings are the direct result of a specific place I have seen. It may have been something picked up from my own neighborhood, or maybe a scene observed while on vacation. At times the source was a location I purposefully sought out to discover; on other occasions, it was a view I happened upon purely by accident while driving down a road. In each of those cases, there would have been one or more sketches or photos created to serve as a reminder of what I saw and (more importantly) felt. Then, days, weeks, months, or even years later, a canvas would be painted in an attempt to recapture that "frozen" moment. Of course, there are many, many ideas that never became paintings. Some may still; most won't. There have also been those rare times when I began from only an idea. No drawing. No photograph. Simply a concept that connected me to a feeling, or to my imagination, perhaps to recollections from the past, or even a fleeting moment of inspiration. Those are—for me—more elusive to catch. In a sense, it's like trying to capture a dream in the sharpest of details long after waking. Or, maybe it's as if you're seeing the world with eyeglasses that are not quite the right prescription. In either case, there's a little information missing. At least, that's how my fully-invented paintings feel to me. But they're fun to do and each work is a furthering of my experience as an artist and human being. They have value. "Earth, Sea, and Sky" is one such painting. After so many trips to Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod, I felt the need to simply express my love for those places where the elements of land, water, and air combine in such a particular way. There is a harmony of beauty and form that speaks to me so loudly that I followed the transmission line to the end. It turns out it lead me instead to Rockport, my home.

born: 1958 Troy NY, USA David Arsenault was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting "Gas" in a grade school library book. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s--more than twenty years later--that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper's work and he decided to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault's paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper." He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since 1993 when he first began showing, David has had or participated in well over one hundred fifty local, regional, and national exhibitions. He has shown in New York, Chicago, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, throughout upstate New York, and now in Rockport, Massachusetts at his gallery, The Art of David Arsenault. His oil paintings, giclee prints, and reproductions are found in private and corporate collections around the world. Arsenault became a juried member of the Rockport Art Association in 2015. He and his wife relocated to the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts in November of 2014; in March of 2015 they opened The Art of David Arsenault Gallery; now in it's seventh year of existence, it resides at 8 Dock Square in the historic downtown Cultural District. His work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life. Arsenault strives to describe instants of shared human experience by expressing the transformational qualities of light, a sense of deeply personal encounters, and the elusive moment frozen in time.
