This grew out of a phone snapshot taken on Hampstead Heath some years ago, of a kid flying a dragon kite. I did a small very loose version first but on blowing it up found I needed a completely new expression of paint and had to break new ground in texture and wash. Also the dragon just didn't work, so after some dead ends it became a jellyfish kite. Flying jellyfish have featured in previous work for no particular reason, I just rather like the way it stretches the mind a bit. I don't really use brushes. The fine fast lines are achieved using very loose paint in a little squeezy bottle, modified with folded up bits of canvas. I'm particularly happy with the figures on the ground, how just a few quick lines can say so much. The verticals rising up from the main figures and ending in balloon-ish shapes sort of just happened as a compositional element. To me they are like a connection to spirit realms but I make no claim on that meaning. You're free to make whatever association works for you. It's split into 2 canvases for ease of transport and I rather like the horizontal split in the composition. To ship work this size overseas I prefer to remove the canvas and ship in a sturdy tube for restretching at the destination.

South Africa
Art has been in my family for 3 generations, and in fact I still use the easel I inherited from my grandfather. As a child of around 5 my father bought my sister and I sketch pads and set up little still life arrangements for us to draw, so art is pretty much coded in. As an adult I was in the right time and place when CGI first came to SA in its most primitive early form (does anyone out there actually remember a 286 computer?!) and I rode that wave as it broke over the local broadcast and video scene, notching up some notable firsts and winning a pile of now forgotten awards. Eventually the forces of my life conspired to steer me to art proper, which is where you find me, now in my 11th year as a painter of pictures.
