Echo Park is one of my favorite places to paint. I like to gaze into the water and paint what is reflected. Echo Park is one of the few places where Los Angeles residents can enjoy nature. While I like to meditate on the beauty of the park in my peripheral is a growing homeless population. Homeless encampments are popping up all over the park and the pandemic has exasperated that. Anger and frustration were my initial feelings. The more I observed I started to see things differently. I began to acknowledge how privilege and fortunate I am. That those living at the park suffered from substance abuse, mental health issues, citizenship status, seniors with no family support. It makes me think of how dangerous and frightening it is to be living in the streets. Living at the park I can imagine brings some security and peace. This is Los Angeles, California. 2020

Francisco J. Palomares has used art to overcome the socioeconomic obstacles of his East L.A. neighborhood since his youth. He transformed these challenges into opportunities, seeing each street as a visual narrative that reflected the ever-changing environment. His early dedication to drawing and painting led him to train at Ryman Arts and earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University, Long Beach. Francisco further expanded his artistic horizons by studying in Florence, Italy, and Guangzhou, China. After his travels, he returned to Boyle Heights, where he established his studio, PalomaresBLVD. In this creative space, Francisco captures the dynamic and often clashing streets of Los Angeles, illustrating the complex, diverse cityscapes through his paintings. His work invites viewers to walk in his shoes, offering a profound exploration of what it means to work, live, and play in the City of L.A.
