About The Artwork

That surrealism is also reflected in the titles of his works, ironic and critical, sometimes added on the canvas itself, which shows the importance he gives to them. These, in fact, reveal the artist’s sense of the humour, playing a key role in his work and leaving the viewer with a sense of ambiguity that places them somewhere between the tragic and the comical: before the expressive force, the violent gestures and the enormous energy of his characters, he places his titles, which engross us or mislead us on the meaning of his works, causing amazement and bewilderment; "I like that my work provokes mixed feelings," he says.

José Moñú (1981) is a Spanish plastic artist, who stands out for his particular and great universe. In his words: "the limits of my language are the limits of my world; art is my way of life" the philosophy of Wittgenstein (Vienna 1889-1951) and Wollheim (London 1923-2003) echoes. His artistic journey began in his hometown, Zaragoza, in 2007. He was soon considered a young promise and he exhibited his works in institutional rooms and galleries in Zaragoza and Aragon. Critics saw in him an original artist with a great future. Since the beginning, he has been very present in his region’s specialized media. The gallery Fernando Latorre, from Madrid, introduced him to the best international art fairs, exhibiting his work in Hot Art Bassel (2010), Art Berlin (2010) and Art Madrid (since 2009). Several galleries bet on him: Cristina Marín (Zaragoza), Pilar Ginés (Zaragoza), Fernando Latorre (Madrid), Gallery 3 punts (Barcelona) and even, after a long stay in Berlin, he along with other artists decided to open a new space for art in Barcelona, the Hans & Fritz Contemporary Gallery (2015). His most recent exhibitions have been in the Gallery 3 punts in Barcelona and in the Cristina Marín Gallery in Zaragoza, both in 2016, as well as in the MIZ Corner and in the Kafell Gallery in Zaragoza, in 2017. In 2018 he exhibited in the Fernando Latorre Gallery in Marbella and in the Matadero (AVAM) in Madrid, as well as in several group exhibitions.
