Elderflower Wine in the Studio Painting

This is the miracle of water (or perhaps sugar) into wine... Elderflower wine fermenting happily in my old studio. You can see an elder tree outside the window in full blossom. After brewing this initial one gallon tester, the following year we made ten gallons. It goes down very well over the winter months, bringing with it the heat of summer. I began this painting on a May morning, already hot and in the middle of a dry spell. I was initially very struck by the orange glow of the raw sugar, the texture and colour of the window frame, the colour of the brick outside and the splendid foliage and blossom of the elder tree. I quickly sketched in a few lines for the perspectives and decided I liked the composition. Within an hour I was into the painting proper. By the end of the next week I was working on that little glimpse of Gladstone Road we see outside. The humidity had risen and the light took on a creamy character which I quite liked, resulting in that softening of contrasts and shadows you can see outside.
