About The Artwork
This portrait was painted from life and is directly inspired by the painterly style of Henri Matisse and bright colours of fauvism. I worked quickly to capture the wonderfully relaxed demeanour of the model, seated as she was among luscious foliage and cushions. The painting is executed with a limited palette of bold colours, playing with the complementarity of burnt orange and pale lilac, with bold dark olive lines. It is signed at the front (bottom right).
