About The Artwork

In college, we were told to do a self-portrait in the mirror with a hand and light source in our beginning drawing class as well as our oil painting class. While I finished my drawing class portrait, I ended up missing school during the oil painting of it. The sketch I drew of my face sat for 14 years on this canvas I made. I have been writing a book that's all about "giving life" to the old you & saw that sketch of my face & thought what better way to show life and the act of renewal than to transform an old sketch of myself into a new colorful painting. The nakedness is meant to reflect the woman being naked and unashamed and reborn in a way as we come out naked. The water to symbolize baptism and new life. The arms positioned in a way to show myself at rest. Floating on top of the water to show security and peace. The blue color to symbolize "depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body." I wanted the ripples to look like veins pumping life to the heart and represent healing in a way. I used flowers to show spring, growth, & newness. Also, in the beginning, Eve/the first woman was in a garden and I wanted this painting to be all about rebirth. I painted the flowers as a crown because I think God is wanting to restore & give back women's place of headship/leadership/position of royalty alongside her man. I wanted her on top of the water to also show that she has "emerged" out of, but more so in a way as a butterfly emerges out of a cocoon and is transformed. My painting is all about becoming, arriving, and being secure in who I am. Much different than the feel I got from my self-portrait I did in college.

During some really difficult seasons and stages in my life, I started having visions of me being free that really gave me the desire to do whatever it would take to power through and fight for my freedom in those areas. I started a “Stages of Freedom” Collection as a result. In late 2007, I was at one of the lowest points in my life and found myself in an emergency room after downing enough aspirin to end my life prematurely. After being there for about 10 hours, my toxicity levels finally reached their peak and started going down. A dr. came in trying to shame me for my choice and asked if I felt stupid for what I had done while I sat there staring at the blank white walls and feeling utterly hopeless. At the time, I only wished I had thought of a better, more immediate plan of action. However, as I looked at the blank white walls, all I could picture was the girl in the rain painting I had painted only months before and realized this collection is meant to be bigger than myself and help others as well. It’s still not entirely complete, but I have every intention of proposing to put it in various places where people need hope and healing and wish for my art to help be a part of that process. I hope you will enjoy it as well as you take a look at it.
