by Emma_jane Austen novels. It is part of the Solo exhibition held in Miami in 2013 with Alberto Linero Gallery. The work is in the catalog: "Strange people in Miami" editrice Salentina. In the current year (2016) was in the competition organized by the Angelica Library in Rome. By Carolyn J. Brown Reading Austen also was the inspiration for Fiorentina Giannotta, an artist from Cosenza, Italy. Giannotta’s favorite Austen novel is Emma. She wrote me that “I find Austen a real genius, being able to impose [her] thoughts at the time. . . . [This work is a] tribute to Jane Austen and Emma, an energetic and talkative heroine who, after a series of vicissitudes, manages to recognize, perhaps, her soul mate” (Giannotta). In a second email she added: “My favorite [novel] is Emma. I think the personalities of the other characters in the book are expressed more than in the other novels. But next week I could change my mind.” Giannotta’s painting Emma e Knightley (2013) is an explosion of color and a vivid expression of the love she bears for her favorite Austen novel as well as the love the couple bears for one another. Giannotta portrays Emma and Knightley standing in front of a botanical background of bright green and red flowers. Knightley is positioned towards Emma, looking down upon her, while Emma stands beside him, sedate, no obvious emotion displayed on her face. The painting looks and feels like the moment before he expresses his love for her, as the bright colors, primarily red, green, pink, and purple, surround the couple and loudly declare the affection they have not yet expressed openly.

Fiorentina Giannotta (New York, 1964). Fiorentina Giannotta's poetics is characterized by a mix of history, irony and a lively exploration of colors and materials. Her works celebrate imperfect and ironic characters, immersed in imaginary and decorative landscapes, which invite the viewer to a visual and emotional participation, rather than a mere contemplation. Giannotta's characters, often inspired by historical figures or fictional protagonists, are conceived as "imaginary ancestors" with whom to establish an emotional companionship, creating a sense of personal connection and almost pleasant obsession. This choice is influenced by the ironic potential of the characters themselves. Elements such as lace, buttons, ribbons and bows add humor and lightness, making the works accessible and fascinating. Giannotta's influences range from great painters to novels and fiction, combining to create figures that express emptiness, rebellion and imperfection. Flowers and slogans are recurring elements in her works. Flowers, used as a decorative background, create artificial landscapes that reinforce the idea of an imaginary world. Slogans, such as “live, laugh and love” or “I am not the Mona Lisa of the Louvre but the Mona Lisa of your home”, add strength and participation to the works, involving the viewer more. Giannotta experiments with various materials in addition to classic acrylics, using industrial paints that allow her to play with consistencies and transparencies. Her favorite colors, such as Nissan green, Barbie pink, Barragan pink, butter yellow, oyster white and iridescent white, allow her to obtain both watercolor and thick effects. This technique, together with the small squiggles made with ceramic brushes, gives her works a three-dimensional and dynamic effect, further accentuating the vitality and energy of her compositions.
