Gestural watercolor painting of two posed figures. Metallic pigment added to discrete areas gives a dynamic quality to the painting, as subtle reflections change with viewing angle. Painting wet on wet, the saturated colors run freely. This gives the work an abstract feel while still retaining its recognizable subject matter. The work is painted on Fabriano Artistico extra white hot press 640gsm paper. I tear a full sheet in half to work at 15x22in, preserving the paper's deckle edge and stretch it prior to painting, so it lays almost completely flat when dry. It's neither framed nor matted. Since it lays flat, has not been bound with adhesives, and has some amount of pigment run through the soaked paper towards the edges, it lends itself to hinged matte mounting and shadowbox framing if desired.

A native of California now living and working in Oakland, Scott Frankel works in a variety of media ranging from oils and watercolors to generative digital synthesis and alternative photographic processes. A former fine arts filmmaker with a career pursued in film, Scott is a member of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Association for Computing Machinery. The most pronounced unifying thread in his work is the pursuit of processes that are largely uncontrollable. Wet on wet watercolors run where they will; gum bichromate prints attain lustrous depth after a dozen or more layers; long exposure pinhole cameras capture what they please; and generative 3D processes take days of processing to reveal their uncanny, synthetic imagery. Each forces a dialogue that demands focused attention, the process requiring process to steer. Scott's work has been collected both privately and by corporations, with a 12 piece commission recently completed for a national financial institution.
