ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Erosion is the dominant theme in this series of paintings and associated video work. The buildings of our urban environments are a repository of memories and events that are played out in front of the urban theatre. Layers of memories and activities are etched into the surface of the buildings and the tropical rains gradually reveal our collective history of the space, echoes from our past. Based on a nondescript apartment building in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, this painting explores how given minimal space we can can still impact our built environment. This painting is one of a series that is also explored in moving image form.

I was born and raised in London, UK, where I studied painting at Chelsea School of Art and developed a deep passion for cities. In the late 1990s, I transitioned into digital filmmaking, utilizing moving image sequences to explore urban landscapes. These sequences were featured in live video mixing performances at various urban and moving image festivals across Europe and the UK. In 2016, I moved to Saigon and completed my creative practice PhD, using moving images to document and visually experiment with the unique urban environment of Saigon. My work often focuses on local areas that remain untouched by tourism and westernization, offering a glimpse into the authentic urban fabric that characterizes many Asian city centers. My influences are varied and include architects such as Bernard Tschumi, Atelier Bow-Wow, and the early works of Liebeskind and Hadid. Filmmakers like Wim Wenders, David Lynch, Peter Hutton, James Benning, and Leighton Pierce also inspire me. I am particularly fascinated by artists such as Paul Klee, Caravaggio, and Ed Ruscha. I primarily work with digital moving images due to their immediacy. The concept of duration is a critical aspect of my creative practice, as it allows me to extract and highlight details of urban spaces—events, movements, and the contexts in which they occur in the spaces and places of Saigon. In 2019, I participated in three major exhibitions. The first was a joint show at the Lygon Gallery at RMIT University Vietnam. The second featured numerous films projected on a large format (16 meters wide) at the Design Hub Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. The third was a joint show as part of the Vietnam Festival of Media and Design in Hanoi, Vietnam. Additionally, my work has been exhibited internationally in the USA, Europe, and across Asia. Several of my digital prints have been acquired by international clients, ranging from large 2-meter-high prints to smaller sizes.
