About The Artwork

The book "Het Ontsnapte Land" by Geert Mak served as a source of inspiration for this painting. The artist incorporated texts fragments in the painting with leaf metal: “At the beginning of the twentieth century, the flat, untouched Dutch countryside to which light can hardly attach itself was not very common. […] Today we hardly realize that a large part of this land should lie a few meters below a sloshing water surface […]" (From Het Ontsnapte Land” by Geert Mak) The changing incidence of light during the day ensures that the texts stand out more or less. This changes the painting during the course of the day. The painting is ready to hang. Because the sides are painted there is no need for a frame.

Have you ever considered how special it is that we can read? Text is nothing but a series of characters in a row, to which we have assigned meanings. We can experience a whole range of feelings and emotions just by looking at those signs. From an early age I have been fascinated by letters. When I look at letters, I see beautifully designed figures. What I find so fascinating is that we don’t or hardly don’t see those figures anymore, once we can read. You are immediately transported to the world behind the letters. Based on this fascination, I want to show how text and image intertwine in my head. How they enter into a symbiosis with each other. I do this by making paintings in which I interweaves image and text. I use gold leaf and silver leaf that reflect the light in a different way each time you walk by. This brings the painting to life and makes it look different every time you look at it.
