About The Artwork

This is an original abstract painting I made at Industry Lab in Cambridge during my time as Artist in Residence there. I made this painting on a sheet of loose canvas and stretched it afterwards so the composition continues around the sides of the stretched canvas. It's stretched across a high quality 1 1/2 inch deep frame with staples in the back and with a wire installed for easy hanging. The title for this painting is inspired by some advertising copy for Fruit Stripe gum, because I think this composition, with it's bright colors and pure blacks and whites, is a bit like a zebra mixed with a rainbow smeared across a canvas. Fruit Stripe gum was one of my favorites as a kid. It had a sweet ambiguously fruity flavor and each long flat rectangle of individually foil wrapped gum was dyed with rainbow colored stripes. The mascot was a zebra with rainbow colored stripes. I enjoy the play between flatness and depth in this painting. The composition is really all about the relationships between the colors—how does it make you feel to see this magenta surrounded by this blue, or that dark red and black surrounded by bright yellow—but it is also like a web of different overlapping layers of chaotic motion and color. Behind it all you see hints of a calm, almost pastel background and it's like, wow this is fun and exciting but if it gets to be too much I can just go back there and take a little rest. For me, that's like life. Everything coming at you all at once and it's great and it's exciting, and most of it is super-saturated and it's hard to take it all in. Sometimes you can find your way back to the calm background, get your thoughts in order, and then try again to take it all in.
