"Faded glory" Painting

I have been intrigued by the motif of the swimming pool for over a decade ( 2014 - 2023). Water, the material substance and its depth, seem to act as a receptacle of feeling (subjectivity), a suspension of thoughtful mood and at times churning feelings. also, similar to a mirror, the surface of water reflects the state of mind of the person contemplating its stillness. It acts as a place of self-reflection and intensified connection between nature and the solitary contemplator (Bachelard, 1983). In certain paintings I explore the notion of the pool as a place set apart, sacred and circumscribed with distinct potency, an almost palpable atmosphere of an incorporeal presence ( a guardian spirit) presiding. In other works, the derelict, neglected condition of the pool touches on feelings of loss. The pool is then transformed into daily tomb collecting leaf-litter and memories (Bachelard, 1983). There are also paintings in which I explore an enveloping sense of wellbeing and exhilaration, where the pool is luminous, patterned by floating leaves and petals, and rippled by a breeze on its surface. I have been influenced by all the seekers of paradise: Paul Gaugin, Matisse and Bonnard, and the painters of pools: David Hockney and Jennifer Bartlett. My paintings are painted onto high-quality, stretched canvas that are ready to hang. I only use good quality British oil paint. I have worked the paint over the edges to allow for them to remain unframed if preferred. I use the traditional method of lean to thick paint and have been painting since 1991. My style can be called poetic-naturalism, and fits into a very long tradition of "Arcadian landscape painting".
