About The Artwork

All of these types of works are based on the nature I experienced while growing up on the Colombian coast and look for the balance within nature that must exist if we are to share this planet. It is expressed using a type of chiaroscuro technique that I independently developed using oil paints and finishing with some acrylic colors to bring out the images in the foreground. This work was much appreciated by the Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez who wrote the following on my work: "There is in the painting of Miguel de la Espriella, "NOBLE", an explosion of light that comes from a background of shadows, the glare of the universe in the middle of a vegetable serfdom populated by birds and dragonflies. What makes an impact are his chiaroscuros with that essential validity that has always been present in Rembrandt. But in the concrete case of Noble it is not about imitation, but continuity, of a process that is forever in renewal and becase of that, lasts. It is the survival of art and its real mode of expression while at the same time controlling it. We shall all have to get used to seeing it remain in his canvas and sculptures, as proof of his versatility." - Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Nobel Prize Winner for Literature 1982) I developed this style of work from around 1988 till around 2004/2006 prior to moving on to more abstract works.

Born in Caimito in 1947, a small town near the Caribbean coast, I grew up with the nature of the countryside and the colors that abounded there in the flora and fauna. I moved around and worked a number of artistic jobs before I finally became a professional artist - over 4 decades ago now! I have worked in oils mainly from around 1985 to 2012 as well as acrylics and occasionally other mediums. I have produced bronze sculptures as well as mixed media works. I have looked to develop different styles and experimented in my creative journey - from naive art, through impressionism, magical realism and expressionist art as well as the action painting that i now present where I look to express the emotions I feel through the action and choice of colors in the artworks.
