This work is dedicated to Franz Marc, whose animal forms were often full of energy and turbulence, in addition to very peaceful scenes. This small suite of paintings, pastels and small paintings on panel represent a attempt to portray the essential dynamism of the bullfight. I wanted to depict the black mass of the bull and the swirling colours of the matador as an abstract interchange of dynamic energies. I saw two bullfights, one in Spain in 1958 and one in Portugal in 1971. In the Portuguese contest, they try to leap over the animal's horns, wherein we see an echo of the bull vaulting ritual of ancient Minoan Crete and even further back to the cult of the bull in Aurignacian cave art. These memories were stimulated again after seeing the posters for bullfights in southern France and also the many works of Picasso where he often used the corrida as a subject.

I am an abstract/landscape painter living on Bowen Island near Vancouver, BC. I use paint to discover and uncover organic forms, sometimes stylized and dynamic, sometimes loose and subtle. As you'll see in the collections on this website, my work draws upon traditions common to surrealism and abstract expressionism. A lot of my inspiration comes while traveling and absorbing other cultures and landscapes, particularly those of France and Italy. As the son of an architect who instilled in me a love of modernist art and architecture, I'm also inspired by painters such as Picasso, Miro and Max Ernst. My work is included in public and private collections worldwide and I have exhibited throughout Europe and in Canada, the United States, Asia, and South America.
