ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting depicts a figure in a landscape and is part of an on going series called 'Figures for a Totem', of which this is number 5. The figure shape is not pre-designed as it is created through spontaneously drawn lines. Through this process, the anthropomorphic effigy manifests itself and gradually appears. The mysterious figure is then carefully painted so that its form becomes more clearly visible. The figures are set in a minimalist landscape and could be seen as having primitive, folk or tribal influences, of which I do have some interest. This original fine-art work is painted on heavy weight paper and robustly secured into an exhibition quality wood frame. The frame is provided with ultra-clear acrylic glazing which can be shipped internationally without fear of damage.

My interest in art started at an early age. I remember seeing books at home where I grew up in the 1970's. The books were about impressionism, surrealism and my favourite showed art from the DADA movement. In my teens I became obsessed with Andy Warhol and it was at this point that I realised making art was what I wanted to do. The Paintings you see on my Saatchi Art platform are in chronological order. The first paintings were made in 2018. They were created very precisely and accurately and are influenced by minimalist ideas. Through 2019 my work moved away from minimalist abstractions and started to veer more towards an expressionist style. Through 2020 and going into 2021, I am exploring ideas that attempt to strike a balance between a minimalist mindset and the spontaneity of an expressionist. The paintings are created using acrylic on heavyweight paper and sometimes I use charcoal, graphite and oil pastel. In the next few month I will be starting to execute my larger paintings on canvas.
