About The Artwork

This circular painting with blue and white peeking through maroon and vibrant red is part of my series Into the Light. It's inspired by the duality of fire. A fire can mean a destructive force that takes lives, causes injuries, turns homes to ashes. You can also use the word fire to describe passion. You can call a person an “old flame.” And then there’s the phrase “sparks fly” or “from the beginning, there was that spark.” When someone ignites desire in us, we might call them “hot” or say, “Yup, that one’s gonna be dangerous.” We talk in terms of fire for other things too. “That experience lot a fire under my butt.” “Her eyes lit up.” “Tensions flared.” “Once I let go of fear, I began to realize there’s light inside of me.” “She is bright.” “Is it a burning question?” Yet, at a very basic level, fire is light. My inner spark helps illuminate something inside, helps me see what's here. Knowing my inner spark, fueling my inner fire, helps me travel through the darkness guided by who I am, my own light.

My art expresses the intricacies of being alive. Consciousness is full of interrelated opposites such as darkness and light, change and constancy, stillness and movement. This concept of duality is core to my paintings, drawings, and mixed media works. I use texture, color, line, and medium choices as well as abstraction, realism, and text to represent different slices of human perception. As a survivor of sexual abuse, I struggled to keep myself alive during my teenage years and early adulthood. My artwork reflects my own story, healing process, and grief as well as my observations from nature, research, and everyday life. Each artwork can stand alone to depict a certain layer or aspect of the human experience, but I also continually group and connect them like fluctuating puzzle pieces building my ever-growing picture of existence.
