This piece depicts the fierce flow of water that swells around Fistral beach. I have built up the momentum in the deep blue ocean water using sand through the paint, sweeping it across the canvas. I wanted to really build the texture of the white water in this piece to portray that fierceness, to do this I have used off cuts of fibreglass from Newquay surfboard shaper Rochfort Customs These off cuts are non recyclable and would normally be destined for landfill, so repurposing them into texture in my art helps Rochfort Customs and I become closer to our goal of being fully eco-friendly.

Cornwall based artist Gemma Lessinger is mesmerized by the sea and her textural artworks are an ode to the wild, powerful and healing properties of time spent by the ocean. With her use of sea salt and sand her paintings are infused with the elements, which she collects and mixes into her pigments. She instinctively portrays the feeling of a beach, tidal pool, or hidden cove, using texture to capture the momentum of breaking waves. Gemma builds texture in the white water of her pieces by repurposing offcuts of fiberglass from surfboard manufacturing, enabling the shaper to be one step closer to being zero waste. These offcuts would end up in landfill if not up-cycled into Gemma’s paintings. This sustainable focus is an ethos Gemma is developing further, re-purposing old surfboards and skateboard decks into ‘canvases’ to create new original works and limited edition prints. With every sale made through Gemma’s business she donates towards the environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage and the lifesaving work of the RNLI.
