In Robin Ballard’s “Elements” series she explores ways to visually interpret chemical elements, and naturally occurring phenomena. After completing the painting the artist saw both fire and ice combined in the work. Four vertical shapes in various shades of aqua and silver leaf represent ice, and the red forms in the background, that of fire. The word flux is defined as something that constantly changes. The artist imagines ice melting, returning to its fluid state. This is emphasized by the watery application of paint, which enables the colors to flow together on the canvas’ surface. Is it an interpretation of ice cycles perhaps, warmed by the sun? The artist leaves it up the to the observer to decide. The sides of the painting have been painted, so it has a finished feel. It is also stretched on a frame and is easy to hang.
