A single palette first laid in the opaque blurry tones of the shapes under the water and then outlined the shoreline to contain and define it's shape. Without changing brushes the sky, mountsins and far shorelines are finished while I add multiple thick brush strokes of the same colors into the corresponding reflections in the water. The humidity is high almost 97% but I have to hurry. Without pause I add the midground, the tall dark trees and the shoreline while once again adding a brush stroke with every color to the water. After this is complete I take a deep breath and flood the palette with water and grab my bin of water brushes dump them into the water pot. Quickly I check the paint on the canvas...it's still wet.... this might just work. And then it begins, I completely immerse myself into the colors I have before me and time seems to stop... pick up a brush, load it with color and find it's place in the jumble of lines in front of me. Before I know it I realize I only have one brush left. I stand back to take a brief look.... the canvas is a mess of random brush strokes. It looks like madness and I smile cause I know it's working... I can feel it. I dip the last brush in pure water and again time stops, faster then I can think (absolutely necessary at times like this) I move from one area to the next weaving all the random lines together until.....stop. I toss my brush into the dirty water and walk away without looking. I wait ten mins and then turn around and look at the canvas ...I hope you like what you see as much as I did cause I signed it immediately ....thank you for looking.

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
