Like so many motivated last year to paint poppies to remember those who perished during the first world war, I was inspired by a personnel family loss in December 1915. 'Forever Poppies is a symbolic painting in memory of a relation - Ernest Crisp, serving with the 15th battalion, Royal Warwickshire regiment. He was fatally wounded on the edge of Maricourt Wood, Somme in France and died later in the night in a field hospital barely a month after been posted to France. 'Forever Poppies' represents the poppies for the thousands killed during the war, and that we must not forget. The oak branch in the foreground shows the edge of a wood, oak representing strength and courage of the British army. The acorns ( which are not around at the same time as poppies) and the sunset represents a new life for future generations that men and women during the war gave their lives too. This is an oak panel painting using the grain of the wood to form the landscape.

Dianna Lee's artwork is also named Artywood derived from her unique painting skills onto oak panels using the wood grain. She is known in her local beautiful rural county of Derbyshire, England for this style of painting, a modern concept using the beauty of the wood grain to enhance the picture. Painting art onto wood panels was a tradition popularly used by artists until the 16th century. Now a days this has been re-visited as an alternative to canvas painting. Dianna takes this tradition to a new dimension, wood grain painting, using the natural beauty of oak grain for the 'lay of the land' in landscapes, 'water ripples', 'back drops' in floral paintings and other effects. Each panel is edged in plain oak to naturally frame every painting. The original painting can be hung straight away. Some pieces have additional frames framed to a high standard by a bespoke framer. Every piece of art is signed and is sent with a certificate of authentication. Each piece is unique.
