Walked passed it a thousand times. The place is on one of our regular hikes, outings with dogs, children, grandchildren, down the years. Climbed the track. Admired the view from the top of the rise, retraced our steps and walked on. Walked right through the painting on reflection. Seen everything there was to be seen, except the scene itself. Then one day, the light was right, and there it was, preening, still as a still life, saying now will you look at me? Here I am, posing, crying out to have my portrait painted. Won't someone open their eyes and see what's before them? That's how Fowler's Oak came to be painted. That's the way of subjects. They bide their time. They decide when the time is right. Please note this work is painted in oils on a gessoed hardboard - masonite - panel.

United Kingdom
I paint industrial architecture, townscapes, landscapes, portraits and still life. Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
