Francesca Painting

_Francesca_ belongs to a suite of paintings that explored portraiture and empathy in the light of Rimbaud's "Je est une autre" ('I is an other'). All the paintings in the suite are of of characters portrayed by Meryl Streep. I chose her because she's virtually the only actor-celebrity famous for not being herself. "Francesca" is of the film _The Bridges of Madison County_, about a fiery woman boxed into a sedate existence in the American mid-West, and a brief affair with a photographer. The painting is based on a still from the film, but I altered the eyes so that the figure appears to know that she has been seen. Why blue? According to psychologists, blue suggests believability. It therefore produces a tension with the act of the character's betrayal in the narrative, as well as creating a paradox of believing that which betrays.
