About The Artwork

Painted for my shows in India in 2007 and 2008. I chose colours and themes that are typical of India and used my expression of Contemporary Tribal Surrealism to celebrate Fun. This is something we do not do enough of, the simplicity of fun. I had an unexpected experience on arriving in Mumbai airport. I was genuinely excited with the anticipation of my very first exhibitions in India. My rude awakening was the group of customs officials questioning me as to my permits for carrying in my paintings as my personal luggage. You can imagine my mind. It went into overdrive to quickly come up with a good reason to enter into India without the required documents. My approach was simple. You guys got to help a silly Indian boy get it on in INDIA. I showed them my paintings on the laptop and then took them out of the travelling tubes I had them rolled up in. I said I was going to leave a lot of money behind in India with hotels, transportation, food and drink, exhibition space rentals, framing people to re-stretch the works for the shows. I promised them that I would be leaving India broke. When they saw the work I had to exhibit they understood that I would not sell anything there as the style was definitely not Indian. They felt sorry for the silly Indian boy that was euphoric in his intent. They were happy to let me enter without the "unofficial duty payments". We were all smiling and I have a good 30 minutes of fun with them.

Bernard Rangel is a self taught artist painting for more than 40 years. His surreal work is a new avenue departing from the established ones of artists such as Miro, Matisse and Max Ernst: it is both creative and visceral. Named "Contemporary Tribal Surrealism" it reflects the Global Village of the 21st century. The lines of his work both in design and colour are creative, coherent, consistent, original and unique, but it all springs forth from a source that is intriguing, like his cultural background. The lines of tribal simplicity fused in solid and amusing lines. In particular when the viewer just looks at the different colour fields the work takes on other dimensions. Bernard has lived in 8 different countries: in both hemispheres and on either side of the globe. Now based in London he explores new ways of presenting his images to a wider audience. His present work can be seen on smartphone protectors, animated videos on YouTube, and in his new studio in Bermondsey at the Biscuit Factory, Block F, Studio 20, SE16 4DG.
