About The Artwork
This large trompe l'oeil painting is inspired by my trip to Vienna and a love story that I wrote thereafter. The girl portrayed on the canvas is the lover of a man diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder. While one identity travels into the future, his mental twin brother voyages into the past, creating a departing tension that tears the loved girl apart into disparate temporal pieces. Her babies, invited by their own personified deaths to a danse macabre, are dead before they are born, carrying over the tragic search for a meeting point at the end and beginning of time.

Sunny J is a Chinese visual artist living in Antwerp, Belgium. She received her degrees from the University of Rochester and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels-La Cambre. Obsessed with the Dissociative Identity Disorder, Sunny uses tempera painting, performance, textile, and installation to express her vision of time and space. She also pays special attention to the interchangeability of art and crafts, focusing on the educative and therapeutic functions of traditional crafts. She is the artist-in-residence in the Old School Residency program in Gorna Lipnitsa, Bulgaria (2015); Shangyuan Art Museum in Beijing, China (2016); AADK Residency in Blanca, Spain (2017); GLO’ART Residency in Lanaken, Belgium (2018), and Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, China (2019). Her works are in multiple public and private collections in three continents.
