This is an oil on canvas work that was done of my muse George, who posed for me. It was completed in one sitting. I chose to have him sit with these linear print shorts on and for him to be on top of some blankets to create a play between the prints. The scale of the work is very large and so it has a very dynamic feel in any room. His gaze is off to the side as if supervising or watching something. Areas of the canvas are left very light and raw, which is something I typically love to do in my work.

Courtney Bae was born in Sydney, Australia to an American mother and a South Korean father. She studied Fine Arts, Law and Fashion Design at various institutions in both Australia and the US before finishing with a BA in Graphic Design. Courtney’s appetite for painting began as early as childhood when she absorbed painting advice from her father’s Chinese painting teacher. This appetite grew during high school but after graduation it remained dormant for most of her adult life where she sought out creativity in other formats. In 2008 Courtney moved to New York City where she followed a path as a Visual Merchandiser in the fashion industry. In January of 2016 the Brooklyn-based artist launched her professional career as a figurative painter and illustrator. Courtney places a lot of importance on color, tactile drapery, print, and composition. But perhaps the most important element is how she incorporates mood into her work.
