Gilded Cage Painting

The bird depicted in the painting is based on the Resplendent Quetzal, considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful birds. Unfortunately, because of this, the Quetzal teetered on the brink of extinction by the turn of the century. It was widely hunted for its feathers, which were used in women’s fashion, most notably hats. The Quetzal represented is meticulously painted in detail and sits atop a gold stripe. The background is a gradation of middle green into dark green, which is then spotted with drops of paint. The painting is part of the artist's Habitat series, which is a celebration of trees, plants, botanical forms and animals.
