Being a lifetime admirer of Johannes Vermeer, I am deeply intrigued by his precision brushstrokes, his ordinary everyday subject matters and his masterful ability to create the illusion of three dimension space. In a span of 5 years, I conceptualized a series of oil paintings based on my observation of modern life with a twist on Vermeer's classic painting styles. The juxtaposition of this modern woman casually replying text messages on her mobile phone against an unfamiliar environment brings a sense of disengagement from her perspective, yet, as audience of the painting, we are engaged...

Gao Chen studied at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Art and honed his skills under master oil painter Chen Danqing before starting his art career at Shanghai Museum of Arts And Crafts. After immigrating to Canada in 1989 he was commissioned by Vancouver Artland Holdings Ltd. for a collection of 20 landscape paintings for its flagship Downtown apartment building in 1991. Between 1992 and 2011 more than 30 of his paintings have been collected by Vancouverites. His paintings uncover the poetic, honest and ideal side of ordinary life. Known for his European classical style of paintings, consisting primarily of portraits and landscapes, Chen has created a coveted collection of paintings that have received attention world-wide. Gao Chen’s current exhibition features works that landscape paintings.
