ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I use the term' The Edge of The Rainbow' to help describe a place just beyond what we can see and where reality starts to merge with a place that is magical and contains joy, love, magic, loss and art. This is a place, like the rainbow, that always remains just out of reach. It is a place that is shimmering and impossible to grasp. My paintings are an attempt to visualise this place. This painting is one of a pair. 'Glinda' and 'Locasta' are the two good witches from the Wizard of Oz which was the first technicolour film and of course contains the song, 'Somewhere over the rainbow'. In practice, I use layers and layers of runny oil paint which drip and glide across the surface, creating a shimmering effect that glows from within.

I like to say that I paint ‘The Edge of The Rainbow’. The term comes from Donna Tartt’s novel, The Goldfinch as she describes a space that sits just beyond reality, where all beauty, magic and art exists. My paintings are an attempt to conjure this space, to break through this reality and try and grasp what lies just beyond what we can see. Its a place that is blurry, shimmering and impossible to capture. In practice, I use layers and layers of thin, runny oil paint to create glowing glazes of colour that vibrate and change in the light. As I apply each translucent layer I like to imagine that light and air is caught within the painting, allowing it to breathe and come alive.
