Currently showing at Gallery Merrick in Victoria British Columbia Maximalism - Did you know that some historians consider that the maximalist art movement of the 1970’s was driven by women? A feminist movement. Artists like Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Kozloff and Cynthia Carlson were rejecting the muted, minimal “high art” that was being shown In galleries made by, you guessed it - white men. Pattern and design were deemed crafty, relegated to women’s work. Still sounds familiar 50 years later. I’m embracing it with honour

My current work is driven by my interest in the restorative power of beauty and how it is perceived. I am asking the question: Does the world embody beautiful ideas? What is symmetry, what is the memory of a beautiful feeling, how does that relate to mortality and anxiety? My work is by no means an answer but an exploration of the questions. within my compositions you will find a variety of abstracted natural elements because we contain horizons, storms, gardens, vacant buildings, flowers, animals and faces and new beginnings within us. When we honour them we can come into rhythm in our own lives. Nature is my cathedral, it is where I find inspiration.
