The painting belongs to my collection prepared for my Indian exhibitions. Goan II was painted to represent the people of India from where my family originates. The people of Goa are a mixed people in blood and consequently race. A mixture of Indian and Portuguese. This intermarrying went on for 400 years and the result is an Indian hybrid. Not only are we different from the rest of India in blood we are also different in our beliefs, food and drink. We are European in our customs and this leaves us with a disadvantage and in a political minority in India. Our ancestoral lands were confiscated by the Indian government when they took Goa back from the Portuguese. Many families are still waiting for their lands to be returned. In reality it was Catch 22 situation that has left Goans in this predicament. Please read about our history for further information. We are a people that have been thrown to the wind but our resolve is a determined one carried out in silence.

Bernard Rangel is a self taught artist painting for more than 40 years. His surreal work is a new avenue departing from the established ones of artists such as Miro, Matisse and Max Ernst: it is both creative and visceral. Named "Contemporary Tribal Surrealism" it reflects the Global Village of the 21st century. The lines of his work both in design and colour are creative, coherent, consistent, original and unique, but it all springs forth from a source that is intriguing, like his cultural background. The lines of tribal simplicity fused in solid and amusing lines. In particular when the viewer just looks at the different colour fields the work takes on other dimensions. Bernard has lived in 8 different countries: in both hemispheres and on either side of the globe. Now based in London he explores new ways of presenting his images to a wider audience. His present work can be seen on smartphone protectors, animated videos on YouTube, and in his new studio in Bermondsey at the Biscuit Factory, Block F, Studio 20, SE16 4DG.
