ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The painting shows Egyptian goddess Sekhmet, whose name means “She who is powerful” or “the One who loves Ma’at”. She was the goddess of the hot desert sun, plague, chaos, war, and healing. She was created from the fire of the sun god Ra’s eye when he looked upon Earth. Sekhmet was a complex and powerful goddess, who was both feared and revered by the ancient Egyptians, who believed she could bring destruction or protection depending on her mood. She embodied the dual nature of the desert sun: life-giving and life-taking.
