The Gravitas abstract painting series extends Steve Hartman's abstract watercolor style and introduces heavy, black, amorphous shapes in a bold, interrupting manner. Each painting uses Golden SoFlat Matte Acrylic Paint, Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor on Fluid 6" x 6" 140 cold press paper. The Gravitas series is best viewed in a grid of framed and matted paintings, and would elevate any space. These small works were inspired by a recent visit to a Henri Matisse exhibit in St. Louis, along with an adjacently curated show of artist Paul Chan at the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis. The interplay of the bold, black shapes in the Gravitas series serves as a homage to Henri Matisse's pioneering paper cut artworks, where the French master used scissors to create dynamic forms with simple yet profound gestures. Just as Matisse explored the tension between positive and negative space in his cutouts, Hartman's use of heavy, interrupting shapes adds a sense of depth and contrast to his abstract compositions. By incorporating elements from Matisse's oeuvre, Hartman not only pays tribute to the modernist icon but also infuses his work with a timeless resonance, bridging the gap between past and present artistic movements.
