Sabina Puppo is a contemporary oil painter working at the intersection of landscape and narrative. She spent seven years in Pueblo Edén, Uruguay, and the rolling countryside there left a lasting imprint on her eye for open horizons, a rhythm she now finds echoed in the Virginia Piedmont, where she lives today, overlooking a 1740s farmstead.
Her canvases unfold through sgraffito, a technique in which she draws back into wet oil to reveal line and texture beneath the surface. The process is instinctive rather than planned. She rarely knows where a painting will lead until her hand and brush find it. Rolling hills and mountains, ancient trees, wandering streams, quietly present wildlife, and small human figures moving through the landscape recur throughout her work, each canvas layered by hand rather than composed from a single fixed view.
Puppo is the seventh generation of artists in her family. Her paintings are held in private collections on every continent, and her exhibition history spans galleries and institutions across South America, Europe, Asia, and the United States.
