Born in Paris in 1950, jazz enthusiast and painting and after a brief study of American civilization, Francis GLENAT is moving instinctively to music education, combining the visual and the sound and discovered a taste for nuance and composition with abstract painters and tachistes at the University of Paris VIII. It was in the year 1989 he started painting on a regular basis. Passionate self-taught, he first sought to test the simplest techniques of oil or acrylic. The style is personal, the topics are varied but the earliest paintings are still very cautious and in a figurative register. Imaginary landscape to still life dream, he turned to subjects freer and produced a series of realistic portraits and stylized rather polarized on American jazzmen. Traveler and lover of contemporary art museums, it is first impressed by the work of Nicolas de Stael for his compositions and his research on the subject. If it is not insensitive to purely geometric abstractions of Malevich and Mondrian, the discovery of the works of Mark Rothko, Tapies or completely seduce her way of thinking and creative and have more influence on his experiments on the plastic depth of a work. In this period of discovery of the great masters of abstract painting, his palette and his pictorial space will thicken and become rich pigment and sometimes collages. Brushes are abandoned and replaced with knives. The format canvases and tools expands to give birth to matter. By working in the same spirit he understands better the process of American Expressionists like Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and especially Emil Schumacher. From this period of trial and error, he steadily moved away from figurative painting and the representation of visible for a more interior and turns to pure abstraction. This informal art suits him best to express his emotions and his experiences. The title of each abstract paintings often evokes moments of these questions, these travel souvenirs or simply the emotions felt during a realization. This abstract poetic expression is the work of a self-taught painter. A plastic surgeon who seeks to develop by technical originals, a pictorial writing system of its own. AN ARTISTIC APPROACH The material applied by Francis GLENAT on these paintings is based coatings treated and acrylic mediums. Natural pigments and techniques of various treatments used are at the forefront of its creation.
