About The Artwork

Ground Part of an ongoing series of works using soils as my pigment and elevating soil to its aesthetic form revealing its true beauty. Ground is a series of artworks centered on the often-over-looked soil that we walk on, harvest from, and excavate. The word’s origin ‘grund’, is Old English meaning foundation or base. “... the soil of any one place makes its own peculiar and inevitable sense. It is impossible to contemplate the life of the soil for very long without seeing it as analogous to the life of the spirit.” - Wendell Berry (1977), The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture. As with all work in the series, Ground 7 is created using archival supports, and professional artist-grade materials. The support is a deep cradled wood frame that is ready to hang but stands freely, if desired giving a sculptural quality to these works. I prepare stable and adhesive painting pigment entirely from local soils and use them in these paintings. The paintings are then varnished and sealed to prevent erosion ('spalling') of the surface. The method of working is sustainable. These paintings focus on the powerful visual impact of the varied colors and textures found in a selection of different local soils. Ground is a process of discovery and exploration for me as a scientist and as an artist.

The Question What have you done with what was given you, what have you done with the blue, beautiful world? Theo Dorgan (2015) - excerpt Artistic expression about nature can be far more than an escape from human-centred reality. It can make a pressing commentary on the state of our planet, the politics and policies that shape public debate about our environment, and the questions we need to confront. My intention is to contribute to this rise in interest and to spark new conversations, by bringing the landscape to life through my work. After a career in science and science publishing, and as a biologist I bring a distinctly different perspective to ‘nature’ for inspiration. I work in a broad variety of 2D and 3D media chosen to express the particular character of the environments I choose. I often incorporate materials from the landscape in pursuing my intention to integrate ‘landscape’ with ‘environment’. Blog: https://marywalthamdotcom.wordpress.com/
