This painting continues on the current theme of the interweaving of people/animals and their habitats. In this case, the habitat is composed of re-constituted trees; suggesting a future where the Natural World remains only in trace form. This painting is on canvas that is stretched on Wooden stretcher bars. 120 x 100cm. The identity of the figure and her dog, suggested via the imprints of personal items of clothing and dog coat and collar, is shown merging with the natural surroundings. The beings seem to be dissolving in to the landscape or maybe floating behind it, resting within it and integrally interwoven with their natural surroundings; human, animal and natural world as one. In this work, the visual reference material for the habitat has been sourced by collecting bark from a local arboretum. Bark is a tough material that resists attempts of water to seep through; it is a protective material for the tree. Lockdown forced me to stick close to home and my Artwork is reflecting this; my 'muses' are my daughter, my dog of 15 years, Teddy and myself. I have therefore started this third series of Climate Change paintings; Habitat paintings that focus on myself, my daughter and my dog and our relationship to our Environments. A special mention in this painting to our much loved dog, Teddy, who is 15 years old and is the inspiration behind this one; it is a kind of homage to him and he has always been a wonderfully kind dog and something of a guardian angel. However, these specific starting points are only springboards for conceptual portraits. This painting celebrates our dog; as a starting point. The Habitat paintings also connect three generations of women (my mother, myself and my daughter), thus referencing the continuity of life and how our actions influence those that come after us and how we are influenced by those that come before us. In this painting, the figure and dog stand their ground; the traces of the figure and dog do not disappear. I am thereby expressing hope that our Planet can remain in balance; with humans and animals existing alongside Nature in respectful partnerships. Like tributaries to a river, the 'streams' in my Artwork are flowing towards a cumulative focus around those things that matter to me. Through the personal, I aim to access what matters to all of us: our Planet and its well being and healthy continuity. I have lived through a time of catastrophic damage to the Natural World; seeing our populations of wildlife decimated and habitats destroyed. I would like, through my Artwork, to express my love for the Natural World and to become as powerful a voice as possible for helping the Planet to heal.
