About The Artwork

This painting is entitled “Hall in the Mist”. It was painted during my studies in the Graduate Diploma Programme at the Royal College of Art (Fall-2022). This work was part of a larger project that examined the Influence of Japan on Art – In Los Angeles and London. While walking in downtown Los Angeles one afternoon looking for inspiration, after seeing the sloping and curved roof lines of the Disney Concert Hall, I was reminded of the architectural lines of Temples in my home of Japan. I did some research on the concert hall, and in these studies, I learned that architect Fran Gehry has often stated that the art and design of Japan has influenced him greatly, in all stages of his career, past and present. On seeing the references about the influence of Japan on Gehry’s work, I realized that my instinctual response about the Hall, was confirmed. The painting shows a semi-abstract view of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It shows a night scene, as supported by the eerie presence of a “Pink Moon”. The overall scene is meant to inspire the feeling of standing next to the massive concert hall at night, after a “Red Rain” has fallen, which obviously draws from Peter Gabriel’s masterpiece song “Red Rain”, and the video that accompanied this great musical composition. The brush strokes were applied quickly, meant to inspire a sense of atmospheric motion, and viewer emotion. The classic artistic elements, line, space, shape, texture, and a strong colour pallet, were used extensively. I can only hope (dream) that on seeing this painting in person, that the viewer might feel, the same inspiration they might feel, after listening to Gabriel’s classic. This painting is masterfully framed (by Frame Masters, Hollywood, CA), and was shown at the XIV Florence Biennale 2023.
