About The Artwork

This art piece from Je-in Yun's recent series 'The Blue Chandelier' shows an ambivalence of a chandelier, a symbol of extravagancy and happiness. While looking at a chandelier, at first Je-in is intrigued by its beautifulness, but soon feels anxious about its status: the possible danger of falling down and breaking apart. On this piece, she portrays a beautifulness of a chandelier by repeating hanging yarn strings over the canvas surface. the two separate canvases are connected by clips and fabric itself, the gap between which creates a strong tension against gravity. Throughout the series 'the Blue Chandelier', Je-in Yun talks about fragility of happiness of today's society, as well as restrict values of domestic life. This series is now shown at the Mimesis Art Museum in South Korea. More pictures are available on her website.

Blue, the main color of this series, symbolizes the false of beauty that conceals its anxious state as well as the irony of the coexistence of splendor and anxiety. (Summer 2015) “Thus every writer’s motto reads: mad I cannot be, sane I do not deign to be, neurotic I am. The text you write must prove to me that it desires me. This proof exists: it is writing.” ― Roland Barthes, The Pleasure of the Text The proof to Roland Barthes was writing. To me, what proves to me that art desires me is my visual creation, which is the act of changing all the social and cultural anxieties that lurk around me into part of my identity, and my strong affection that offsets them.
