About The Artwork

Oil painting on linen. I became an existentialist at 40. This painting is the beginning of my more minimal stage, a transitional piece to be sure. In giving my life meaning, I also give life and meaning to my paintings. In this case, I am removing more and more of the literal narrative (like the little cartoon characters), and replacing them with basic forms that are based on emotions. The little feet give life to the bent over form, as if representing a person who is bending over backwards and banging its head into the floor. If it weren't for the flimsy, black sticks, holding it all together, this shape could go apeshit crazy, run amuck, or wreak havoc. It is in fear of losing control, and the unknowingness of what that means is where the fear is dead based. So essentially it is about the fragility of holding oneself together in crisis.

I grew up in Los Angeles and currently live in the Joshua Tree desert. I am an artist with physical and mental disabilities and identify as transqueer or nonbinary. I am also completely self-taught. I have been a drummer and an artist my entire life. I've toured the U.S. and Canada, and performed for large audiences, played groove/R&B/Hip Hop, jazz, rock n' roll, and studied with notable drummers, musicians, and producers. Earlier in life, I worked as a cutter in the garment industry with my family, beginning at age eleven. I wound up without a formal education and am completely self-taught, but have always been very self-determined. Along with making art, I also create handmade Artist's books. They've been widely collected and placed in major museum and university collections around the world. You can see them on my website at esart.com.
