Being a former architect, I'm always drawn to Victoria Street in Edinburgh. Its three dimensional form and topography are incredibly complex. It's a curving cliff face of multi-coloured buildings with facade stacked upon facade and walkways threading through at a number of different levels and crowned by the spire of the converted church, now the Festival box office known as The Hub. I decided, one cold day, to draw it directly onto the paper I would be painting on, in situ, not realising quite how frozen I would be once I'd finally resolved all of the fiendishly complicated changes in perspective for the various elements. The classic view of this street is from the lower end, but I find the interplay of shapes more interesting from this position at the top. Needless to say, I painted back at the studio. To add further complication, when I came to paint I decided to change the light from the overcast day it was when I was there to something more pleasing - morning sun. As with many architectural scenes, it was a constant battle to not get bogged down in the detail, especially as it is a smallish piece. This is a signed, unframed, limited edition, giclee print (number 1 of 25) on slightly textured A4 size art paper and comes signed and numbered by the artist (the original is still available to buy - return to my artworks page for details).

I'm an artist specialising in watercolour painting. I live and work in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK and strive to capture the drama and majesty of the Scottish urban and natural landscape in my work. I'm particularly interested in how light and form interact with one another and getting a sense of this across to the viewer when I paint.
