In 2016, we went on a quick trip round the South Island. I’d left my camera behind, so I decided to buy a new one in quake-ravaged Christchurch. We came home with over a thousand photos, quite a lot of them taken during a walk we took up the Hooker valley on the way towards Aoraki / Mt. Cook. This video is based on one of thuse photos, so buying a new camera when I already owned one (well, five) was, I hope you’ll agree, a good decision. I was in two minds about doing this painting; there are several technically challenging regions in the image (at least for me), and completing a painting every day means there’s no time to sit around and think about a better way of doing things. In particular, I really had no idea how I was going to paint the tussock areas in the foreground and the mid-ground. They need different approaches, because they’re on different scales, but they have the same vegetation, so they but need to look mutually consistent. Anyway… I took the plunge, and in spite of my misgivings, it’s all worked out really rather well.
