Painting: Oil on Wood.
One of 3 small paintings that develop some of the ideas contained in "H.Q.". All influenced by Chardin's painting "The House of Cards" in the National Gallery, London, which has been described as a meditation on the frailty of human endeavour and as such, a vanitas. In this piece, a house of coloured cards, some mirrored and containing a light within, are precariously balanced in an airy space. The structures we create house our emotions and ambitions; love and security, a home, a family, a career, a future, a faith. Yet so many structures look and feel provisional and utilitarian, creating an environment of precarious dissonance. I hope the viewer can read this work in many ways, simultaneously positive and negative, as our relationship with our constructed world inevitably is.
