About The Artwork

This piece has an interesting story in that I had created the portrait element as a mural that did not make it to fruition due to the early days of the pandemic. After exploring and experimenting with different styles and techniques in 2020, I revisited this figure and combined it with some of the elements I'd developed over the year to produce this, my last painting for the year 2020. Red can be tricky, but in this piece it grabs your attention without overwhelming it, perhaps offset by the gradient script/graffiti layer underneath. Those elements give the figure a base to propel off the canvas, and the blue gradient helps add to that sense of depth between the figure and the background, giving it a 3D element. The title, a nod to a favorite song of mine, I felt was fitting for how that year went.

I was born and raised in Nashville, TN, and am currently based in Portland, OR. I studied music but quickly fell into graphic design and painting murals after school. I have been a full time artist for over a decade, the past several years primarily spent as a painter, specifically using a mixed media approach of acrylic and spray paint. My paintings are a mediation and study of the things that I find curious, particularly creating abstracts using color palettes found in our everyday surroundings. My paintings are often a study of these subjects, usually coming across as tranquil and inquisitive, though satire, anxiety, and desire do also work their way in. The bright colors found in most of my paintings help to alleviate and contrast the weight of a subject or to set a lighter tone. My pieces are available with or without stained floating frames, which are handmade in Portland, OR. Please contact me at adrien@aspagif.com or on Instagram @asap.gif
