In this artwork, I embraced the spontaneity of emotions, using mixed media to create vibrant, abstract and expressionist chaos. Each stroke and color splashed across the canvas translates into a release of energy and a dance of impressions. This piece is a celebration of life's unplanned moments, in...

About the Artist

Sara Voss

My practice explores identity, emotional experience, and the ways we process what happens to us. I use painting as a way to work through situations, memories, and emotions that feel heavy to me. Painting becomes a space where these experiences can be expressed, transformed, and given another form.

Working primarily on raw canvas, I use mixed media including acrylic, pastels, charcoal, pencil, and watercolour. My process is intuitive and spontaneous. I build layers of colour, marks, drawings, and forms, allowing the work to develop in response to what emerges. Figures, eyes, flowers, creatures, and other recurring forms appear naturally. They do not necessarily belong to a single narrative or have fixed meanings; instead, they function as fragments of an internal landscape. I allow them to coexist, even when they seem unrelated, because their presence often feels emotionally necessary in the moment.

The works move between abstraction and recognisable imagery, between delicacy and intensity. Loose lines and childlike forms exist alongside dense areas of colour and more forceful gestures. This tension reflects the way emotions can accumulate, shift, contradict themselves, and remain unresolved. Rather than representing an experience literally, I am interested in translating its emotional residue into colour, gesture, layering, and form.

For me, painting is a way of making sense of what cannot always be articulated verbally. It allows difficult experiences to become something tangible, something I can look at, return to, alter, and ultimately move through.
