Ibis Painting

I painted this image of a group of ibises that I found myself surrounded by while taking photographs in Sydney's Centennial Park several years ago. With every year that passes there seems to be an increase in the amount of frustrating or disturbing incidents involving the ibis and their interactions with humans. They rummage through our bins, they unflinchingly steal steaming hot chips from our finger tips and stain our vehicles and bins with their highly bacterial excrement. When we bear witness to the red, raw pigmentation underneath an ibis’ wings, we can’t help but instinctively shudder, knowing well that this creature has no fear of the parasites which inhabit its feathers. But does this species of bird which is so abundant in the Sydney’s centre and suburbs truly deserve its reputation for being so reckless and filthy? Are they not in many ways far more clever and resourceful compared to some of the other creatures which we share this continent with? Is it not the case that some ibis posses more strength of character and resilience than some humans do? Quite understandably, over the years they have realized that business is more lucrative in the big city compared to the bushy landscape which they once preferred to inhabit. In homage to Sydney's growing ibis population I decided to paint them in all their majestic Glory. They are daring, resourceful and beautiful creatures.
