About The Artwork
Deep in a woodland glade a colossal Boulder was quietly resting. It was the home of some of the small people who lived under it great weighty belly. Moss and lichen and little ferns grew on its back covering its granite interior. Once a moving, living being the Boulder dreamt of the time before it had been turned to stone and looked wistfully up at the Stars above, glimpsed through the trees. This painting, oil on board, is inspired by the many giant boulders resting in under the area wooded areas of Penwith, very characterful, they often speak to me their own individual story using the language of no words.

In seeking to capture a sense of peace and simplicity, my work explores and expresses the mystic sense of spirituality found in Nature. The process itself and the practicing of an open, accepting state of mind towards unexpected insights and visual outcomes, very much forms the core of my practice. Employing left-hand drawing and the technique of monotypes (where a one-off print is created) to work with the subject matter, often shapes and characters from Nature, I leave imagination and serendipity to work its wonder. Often this process produces compositions of perfect imperfection, which suits the simplistic expression of authenticity, which is my experience when being with natural elements such as a branch, a stone, bark, lichen on a boulder.
